Uluru and the Red Centre

Whatever it says I'm writing this on Christmas Eve at 8pm. Day 40.

Had another touristy day in Sydney on Saturday. I visited 2 museums and walked across the harbour bridge to getsome good photos. We all decided not to pay for the Harbour Bridgeclimd. It costs about 80 quid, you can't take any cameraswith you, you get 1 group photo and any other photos cost 23 quid each!!! So no to that. In the evening we went out for a final meal and a few of us walked intoi Sydney to watch carols in the park with a firework show - which was different.

Sunday was farewll to 4 of the party and hello to 1. 4 of the group left as they were only doing the east coast. So thanks to Sally (hope your diving goes well in Sydney), Lady Gwendolin (mad to go camping again. I think that a we could modify the recipe for Eggs Benedict by adding a coating of flavoured cous cous to get Eggs Gwendolin), Annette (hope NZ is excellent and your house floats, 'being as batty as a bag of spanners'is an asset in my book) and Mark (hope the vain people of the Isle of Wight keep you in their mouths for aslong as you need). I'm never one to say goodbye. Travelling companions are just moments in time, you just hope that your travels together are improved by being together. Mine were so thank you..

We flew out to Yulara on Sunday arriving at lunch time. After setting up camp and having an acclimatising swim we went to watch sunset over the rock - Uluru (Ayers Rock as was). Quite beautiful. This morning we were up at 4:45 to go and watch sunrise over Uluru and to walk around its base. Its 9.4km around and is done best out of the heat of the day. It is easy to understand why the ABorigines think it is a magical and spiritualplace. From a distance it looks amazing as it towers over the surrounding waste land. Up close it has different looks and features as you walk around it. It also has waterfalls and water holes and magical caves. Another experience to savour for ever.

After a rest and lunch - even these mad dogs don't go out into the mid day sun!! We then went for a walk around Kata Tjuta - which is another collection of rocks and boulders about 25 miles from Uluru - I say boulders they are 500m high. Unlike Uluru there are valleys and walks through the rocks and it gives another view on this area.

Tomorrow its Christmas Day and we are off to Kings Canyon. We do aim to have a Christams type meal - no turkey but we have pudding and mince pies. It will be different!

And the weather is COLD for this time of year. Yesterday it was 28C , today 31C. People here are amazed that it is so cold.

Have an excellent Christmas Day tomorrow whatever you do. Next post willbe Friday - next civilisation we see..

Hi Rob,

Just wanted to say, hope you had a great Christmas, must have been strange not being freezing cold. We miss you. It will be strange going on the Christmas walk and you not being there. Anyway - we're still really envious of your exploits! Take care.
