Barossa Valley

Did you know that 49% of Australians are overweight? Spend your time near the beach and its hard to believe but out here in tourist ville its pretty obvious.

The Aussies seem to want to become mini America..

And whats the supermarket chain in Aus. No UK names or US names. Coles is quite big. But the biggest - Woolworths. Yes Woolworths - they are 'the fresh food people' and they are everywhere, big Ws, Woolworths and Woolies Express. Noweher near as good as UK supermarkets but a useless piece of info for you.

Cricket was pretty good Thursday although it got too hot to sit in the sun. Thursday peaked at 42.6C IN THE SHADE in Adelaide. 20/20 cricket was entertaining except some bright spark decided to play music tracks between each ball - so you had a 5sec burst of noise then cricket, then noise.. I must be getting old....

Picked up the car and headed off the the Barossa Valley on Friday. Stayed Friday and Saturday night in Tanunda (look on the map). On the way picked up my expensive camping gear - tent 10quid, lilo 10quid, cool box 20quid. No wonder the chinese rule the world - how can a tent cost 10quid?

Saturday went off for my wine tasting - although drink drive rules are a bit strict so only really samples when I got back to Tanunda. Visited 'Wolf Blass' (because I've heard of them), Penfolds (ditto) and finally Jacobs Creek (because I've drunk them) and finally Chateau Tanunda - which I could walk to. The Barossa Valley has a heavy Germanic influence - german places names, Lutheran Churches. Early settlers from Germany settled the valley and started the wine industry - hence Wolf Blass is actually Wolfgang Blass, Jacobs Creek was started by a German called Johann Gramp. Chateau Tanunda wines were lovely and the setting was very picturesque. However, finished off the day with a bottle of Jacobs Creek Shiraz Rose 2007 (which won an award) - to me it tastes like pop and should be enjoyed on a sunny day.

Last night was woken by the sounds of a Saturday night. My camp site has a lot of cabins on it. There was a wedding in town and many of the cabins were rented out to the guests. Lots of shouting t 1:30 was followed by the local police trying to find out who had beaten up who and why. Good to see the world is the same.

Now I'm in Hahndorf , the oldest german town in SA, before I head off towards Melbourne. Hope to get there towards next weekend and haven't decided what to do on the way yet. I did want to visit Ballarat as it has a historic gold mining town and museum - however, in keeping with my desire to get the full Aussie experience there are some serious bush fires there (250 firefighters and 30 trucks) so I'll keep my eyes on the news.

Hear its grey and grim there. Here it is sunny, so avoiding winter seems to be working
